CAPYBARA — THE NEW RESIDENT OF BAKU ZOOLOGICAL PARK!
Capybaras, considered the largest and friendliest rodents in the world, are now at the Baku Zoological Park.
Three capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) — one male and two females — have been brought from the Belgian zoo “Tropic Zoo.”
The new residents were initially kept in the park’s quarantine zone under veterinary supervision, afterwards, they were transferred to a specially equipped enclosure that simulates their natural habitat, where they successfully completed the adaptation process.
This species mainly inhabits tropical and subtropical climate zones of South America, particularly near bodies of water, and is known for its semi-aquatic lifestyle. The webbed structure between their toes enhances their swimming ability and provides excellent adaptation to aquatic environments.
Unlike other rodents, capybaras possess both incisors and canines that grow throughout their lives. The consumption of tough plant material helps maintain their teeth at a stable size. Capybaras consume a daily amount of vegetation equivalent to approximately 70% of their body weight.
Capybaras are social animals that typically live in groups of 10–20 individuals and use scent and various sound signals to communicate. When faced with danger, they prefer to take cover in the water.
It is worth noting that capybaras are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of “Least Concern.”
