A magnificent innovation at the Baku Zoological Park
Baku Zoological Park has become an official participant in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), implemented by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). The EEP programme aims to conserve the genetic diversity of rare and endangered species, as well as their controlled breeding in captivity.
As part of this programme, two Persian leopards (Panthera pardus saxicolor)— a female and a male were transferred to the Baku Zoological Park. This subspecies of leopard is included in both the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the "Red Book" of the Republic of Azerbaijan as an endangered species.
It is worth noting that as of April 1, 2025, the Baku Zoological Park has been granted candidate member status with EAZA due to its activities aligning with international standards and modern approaches.
The candidate status provides the Zoological Park with a number of important opportunities, such as international recognition, close cooperation with EAZA member zoos, participation in species conservation efforts for those whose populations are declining in the wild, the application of advanced scientific and practical experience in animal care, the enhancement of local specialists' professional skills, and the strengthening of educational programs.
