This animal species belongs to the class Mammalia, the order Carnivora, and the family Ursidae. In Azerbaijan, its range includes the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, the Talysh Mountains, and foothill areas. Its body length is 1.7–2.2 m, and its weight ranges from 100 to 340 kg. It has an elongated muzzle, small eyes, and a short tail. Its fur is thick and grey. Its canine teeth are strong, while the crowns of its molars are broad and flat. This is related to its omnivorous diet. Its nose is well developed, and it has a keen sense of smell. Its paws are large, strong, and five-toed, with sturdy, curved claws. Unlike other predatory mammals, bears have almost no facial expressions. It is a forest-dwelling animal. Depending on the season, it feeds on both plant and animal matter. It usually gives birth to 2–3 cubs, sometimes as many as 5.
