A species of bird belonging to the Ibis family of the Stork-kind order of the Birds class. It is a nesting and passing bird in Azerbaijan. It flies to Azerbaijan in March to its nesting grounds, and in September it migrates to its wintering grounds. Its habitats are marshes and reedbeds in water bodies, and open marshes on the coasts. Its color is shiny dark brown like metal. Its beak is curved downwards like an arc. Its head, neck and belly are reddish-brown, its wings and tail are blue-green metallic black. The feathers on the back and tail have a green-purple hue. It usually lives in flocks. It is active during the day and at dusk. It is monogamous. It forms pairs, builds nests in jungles and various bushes, and lays 2–5 eggs. Chicks begin to appear in late April, early May and June. They fledge in late June and July. Their main food consists of water nymphs, crabs, snails, and sometimes small fish and frogs.
