The first lemur cub in Baku Zoological Park
The first baby of ring-tailed lemurs brought to Baku Zoological Park from Eskişehir Zoo in Turkey and Almaty Zoo in Kazakhstan has been born. The mother lemur does not leave the baby, carrying it on her back and belly to protect it from danger. The active and healthy baby learns social behaviors and adapts to the environment by interacting with other members of the group. The growth and development period of the baby can take 6 months or a year.
Lemurs are social primates living in matriarchal groups of 15-20 individuals on the island of Madagascar. One of the most striking features is their long tails with black and white stripes, which help maintain balance when climbing and jumping, and are used to give signals and spread scent. Depending on the species, lemurs are diurnal or nocturnal, and like to rest in the sun.
Since ring-tailed lemurs are assessed by the IUCN as a “vulnerable” species, increasing their numbers and protecting them is of great importance.
