The new inhabitant of the Baku Zoological Park is Simba
"Simba," a five-year-old male lion brought from the Almaty Zoo of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has become a permanent resident of the Baku Zoological Park. Initially, he was kept under veterinary supervision in the park's quarantine zone for one month. Later, he was moved to a permanent living area with two female lions, successfully completing the adaptation process, and they have now formed a family. The transfer of the male lion to the Baku Zoological Park was carried out as part of an international exchange program with the Almaty Zoo.
It should be noted that lions (Panthera leo), the second-largest carnivorous felines in the world, mostly inhabit the vast open plains, savannas, forests, and semi-desert areas of East and South Africa. Females, cubs, and several males live in groups known as "prides." In the wild, lions typically live 10-14 years, but in captivity, away from threats, they can live up to around 20 years. Care for cubs is provided not only by the mother lion but also by other females in the pride. Lions play a vital role in the food chain, maintaining ecological balance and contributing significantly to biodiversity.
The Baku Zoological Park is dedicated to protecting biodiversity by conserving ecosystems and educating the public about the importance of biodiversity through educational and awareness-raising activities. The main goal of the zoo is to protect rare and endangered animal species listed in Azerbaijan's "Red Book," ensure their breeding, and release them back into the wild. Additionally, the zoo organizes educational programs that allow visitors to learn about the natural world. The initiatives aimed at increasing the population of species and reintroduction projects play an essential role in instilling ecological responsibility in younger generations and raising awareness about biodiversity.
It is worth mentioning that the transfer of the lion from the Almaty Zoo to the Baku Zoological Park was carried out free of charge by "Silk Way West Airlines."
