The species has a wide geographic distribution - Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia. Inhabits various freshwater basins.
Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 5-9 years. The female lays 3-19 eggs. Only females will appear at an egg incubation temperature above + 30°C, and only males appear at temperatures below + 27°C.
