A very wide geographic range, occupying various altitudes throughout Central, South, and Southeast Asia. They inhabit arid, open areas, and may be found in grasslands, woodlands, and in mountainous regions up to 2500 m in elevation.
Rhesus monkeys live in troops of 25 to 150 individuals or more. A strict hierarchy is established, headed by an aggressive male leader, which seeks to maintain power for as long as possible. Having matured, they do not lose family ties, and continue to live as a family within the troop.
