The axolotl is found only in Lake Xochimilco in the Valley of Mexico and in the canals and waterways of Mexico City. Because they are neotenic, their habitat reflects this: the highland watershed.

Literally translates to “water dog”. Axolotl resembles a large newt with three pairs of outer gills sticking out. It has a wide head, disproportionate to the rest of its body. Has an ability to regenerate lost body parts. Axolotls are predators and reach puberty without turning into an adult form. It is not recommended to hold them in hands as the temperature of a human palm can be too high for them.
