A ruminant animal species belonging to the class Mammalia, the order Artiodactyla, and the family Bovidae. It is found on the Karabakh Plateau, in the Shahdag and Murovdag mountain ranges, and in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, in the Zangezur and Daralayaz mountain ranges, as well as on Nehramdag, Ilanydag, and Daridag. It is distributed at elevations of 1,500 m and above sea level. The body length of an adult male is 130–180 cm, the tail length is 15–20 cm, and the weight is 50–85 kg. Females weigh 35–60 kg. Their tails are short, erect, and flattened, with a hairless underside. The undersides of their hooves are very rough and adapted for gripping steep rock surfaces. The maximum horn length is 132 cm in males and 20–25 cm in females. Males are silvery-white, with a black stripe running along their backs. Females are reddish-brown throughout the year, with a black stripe running along their backs. During the birthing period, females live in the foothills, unlike adult males. Adult females give birth to two offspring, while younger females give birth to one and, rarely, three.
