Ruddy shelducks are usually observed singly or in small groups in the wild, but they form large flocks in the winter months. During the mating season, especially in the summer months, males develop a dark ring around their necks. Females have a white spot on their head, which is a visual indicator of sexual dimorphism. Nests are built by females using feathers, hair, and grass in safe areas away from water bodies. During the incubation period, females are very aggressive, while the male protects the egg and the nest.
